In the face of the global pandemic, helping others is helping ourselves.
Background and challenges
In April 2020, South Africa’s trains halted, planes stopped, and all transportation was locked down. Lives were being lost, and the economy was shrinking every second. During the initial outbreak of the pandemic, many countries were rapidly overwhelmed. No-one could have predicted the sheer scale and speed of the pandemic’s development and impact. At this time, protective facemasks were urgently in massive demand worldwide, and the price of the masks spiralled out of control. The majority of underprivileged people could not afford to purchase masks. In response to the emergency, mask factory was desperately needed to be established locally, before the country went into complete lockdown.
The owners of the industrial zone joined forces and proposed establishing a local mask factory and issuing some free and subsidised masks. In this emergency situation, the architect Zuoqian Wang was appointed to lead a team to urgently realise this plan and build a mask factory. Due to the limited time and complexity of the task in hand, the team had to complete the design of the mask factory in the lowest possible time and budget. The construction team were also under enormous pressure. They worked tirelessly on-site day and night to actualise the ambitious project. Miraculously, with additional help from local workers, volunteers and private owners, the temporary mask factory was completed within the first 20 days of the outbreak.
